The Gita Govinda is a collection of songs and poems that explore the love between Radha and Krishna, often interpreted as a symbolic representation of the relationship between the soul and the divine. The text is divided into twelve parts or cantos, each containing and further classified into twenty-four chapters. Each song is made up of eight couplets, called Ashtapadi. About the Author
Jayadeva was a prominent 12th-century poet and devotee of Krishna, famous for his Sanskrit poem Gita Govinda. The poem celebrates the love of Krishna and Radha, and is widely recognized as a masterpiece of devotional literature. Jayadeva’s work has significantly influenced subsequent poetry and painting in the bhakti tradition throughout India. He was born in the village of Kenduli Sasan, near Puri, in Odisha (formerly Orissa). His father was Bhojadeva, and his mother was named Radha Devi. He was married to Padmavati. Jayadeva was closely associated with the temple of Jagannatha (Krishna) at Puri, where recitation of his Gita Govinda was regularly performed by the temple dancers.
Jayadeva was deeply devoted to Krishna, often identified with Jagannatha, the form of Krishna worshipped at the Puri temple. His Gita Govinda has had a lasting impact on devotional art and literature, inspiring numerous interpretations and artistic
