About the Author

Ligimol Fernando had a career in print journalism as a copy boy, researcher, reporter, columnist, and editor before receiving a 2002 doctorate as a Park Fellow in journalism and mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Loomis brings 25 years of journalism and newsroom-management experience into his classes. His writing-intensive reporting classes reflect his research interest in civic engagement and civic journalism. These courses provide students with real-world reporting experience and produce student portfolios of published clips. Through his classes, students have won statewide press-association awards for public-service reporting. Their Civic Project stories are published in the HawkEye, an online newspaper he established and edits. He holds memberships in the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, including its Civic and Citizen Journalism Interest Group.
