This edition reexamines the concept of Good Governance and its different dimensions. In fact, the notion of good governance has become one of the critical determinates of development in the developing world. Accordingly, the new edition has incorporated all those issues and problems having impact on the quality of governance. Rule of law is the cardinal principle of liberal democracy and, hence, crucial for promoting good governance and human rights. In this edition, the authors have made a comprehensive and critical investigation of the functioning of judicial system in India with a view to highlight the fact that the future of democracy, development and governance are closely interlinked. Transparency in administration is vital for promoting good governance and economic development. The authors have also made a very systematic study of the right to information incorporated under the Indian Constitution. It is undoubtedly one of the major developments in the direction of promoting good governance in India. A comparative study of India and China, regarding the role of good governance in enhancing the economic development of these two countries, is an important part of this volume. In addition, a case study of the post-Apartheid South Africa has been made to highlight the point that prevention of political violence and crime is essential for promoting good governance and economic development.  

About the Authors

S. N. Yadav is an eminent political scientist specializing on contemporary political and economic issues having impact on the post-Col War international order. Governance and development are his key areas of research investigation. The author visited Portugal in 2001, and Uganda in 1999 and 2000 for undertaking academic and research assignments. His prominent publications include, India-Uganda Relations: A New Model for South-South Cooperation, Journey of Overseas Indians: Labour to Investor, Rwanda: Towards Reconciliation, Good Governance and Development. He has written over 15 books. The author was nominated for the Chinese government fellowship, a joint research programme by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Government of India) and the Government of the People’s Republic of China in the year 2001.  

Dr. Indu Baghel is teaching political science and public administration in the University of Delhi. She visited Portugal for her doctoral work on “Local Administration in Angola during the Portuguese Colonial Rule” under the joint fellowship of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India) and University of Delhi. Her special areas of research include governance, citizenship, democracy, corporate ethics and social responsibility of business.
