About the Book

This book is an attempt to provide a collection of articles based on different issues of public sector banks in general and NPAs in particular. The banking sector reform was an integral and important reform which led to the banking sector to a capital restructuring, enhanced competition, and increased autonomy, technological up gradation and performance achievement. However, this is a fact that in the recent years the banking sector suffering from major setback i.e accumulation of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) and a major question is the sustainability of the banking sector. Since public sector banks plays the role of commanding height in the mixed economy structure of India, the major concern is the mounting NPAs of public sector banks and negative impact towards economic development. In this volume seventeen articles have been included which are written by notable academicians, researchers and practicenors. These papers are were presented and thoroughly discussed in the Seminar “Public Sector Banks at Cross Road and the Forward” held at Birla Global University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

About the Author

Dr Brajendra Kumar Das, Registrar and Professor Banking and Finance at the Birla Global University (BGU), Bhubaneswar, is a Ph.D, LL.B. and Diploma in Business Management. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. Before joining BGU he was professor – Banking and Finance at BIMTECH, Greater Noida. He has participated in a number of national and international level conferences. He has published a number of articles in journals, magazine and book of national and international repute.

Before joining academics, he retired as General Manager (GM) of a leading public sector bank of India. In his banking career, he was associated with various decision making process at the board level and various committees of the board. He was member of the corporate level committees like Asset Liability Management Committee (ALMC), Risk Management Committee (RMC), New Business Committee (NBC), Top Management Committee (TMC), Vigilance Advisory Committee (VAC) etc. He worked as chairman of Regional Rural Bank (RRB) and Chairman of the recruitment board for recruitment of probationary officers in the public sector banks in Odisha. Dr Das also worked with Prof Yunus, the Nobel laureate in Bangladesh Gramin Bank under a UNDP project.
