About the Book
The present study of Social Transformation in Rural India presents an interdisciplinary perspective on the understanding of concept and feature of rural society and its social structure, rural-urban interaction by trade and labour migration, social mobility and mobilisation, caste and class in agrarian movements, socio-economic consequences of land reforms and green revolution, and impact of globalisation and liberalisation on rural society has been discussed into five chapters. The basic features of the rural society and its relationship with urban societies is discussed in the 1st chapter. The 2nd chapter examines different aspects of social structure of rural society. The 3rd chapter deals with caste and class conflicts against feudalistic and capitalistic oppression of peasants in agrarian movement. The impact of land reforms and green revolution on socio-economic transformation in rural society is examined in the 4th chapter. The last chapter explains the various factors, process and avenues involved in changes of the traditional Indian social structure. This book would be of an immense value for students, researchers and teachers as it encompasses entire gamut of structure and change in rural society.
About the Authors
Dr. Ritesh Chatterjee is a well-known scholar and teacher of sociology who taught at several Colleges in North Bengal University, Siliguri. He has done MA and Ph.D. from University of Calcutta, Kolkata. A keen scholar of sociology, Chatterjee has many books to his credit. In addition, he has published many research papers and articles in reputed national and international journals and presented papers in national and international seminars and conferences. Presently, he lives a retired life and devotes his time in editing and writing.
Dipali Saha, a dynamic scholar of sociology, has done Ph.D. from North Bengal University (West Bengal). She was associated with several projects of ICSSR Kolkata and also worked as a lecturer in Ashutosh College in Kolkata. Presently she is devoted in social work and associated with NGO in North Bengal. Her published books are Accountability, Governance and Legitimacy of Civil Society, Rural Development in New Dimensions; and Sociology of Social Stratification. She has written a number of important articles in journals of national and international repute.
