About the Book

This edition is a compilation of articles authored by eminent personalities contains the information and analysis on the socio-political movements stirring the sub-Himalayan region of North Bengal during the period of last 100 years. The whole objective of this book is to make people properly informed and enlightened about the issues involved in the movements one after another organized mainly by the indigenous people of North Bengal region. The book in two volumes with 16 chapters gives descriptions and scholarly analysis of Kshatriya Samiti Movement, Hita Sadhani Movement, Uttar Khanda Movement, Uttar Banga Tapasili Jati O Adivasi, Sangathan (UTJAS), Kamtapur Movement, Kamtapuri Dialect, Naxalbari Movement, Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), and  Greater Cooch Behar Movement. This work would certainly enrich our knowledge on this region.

About the Editor

Dr. Sukhbilas Barma, the editor of the book, a retired IAS Officer of West Bengal, held many important administrative posts including the post of District Magistrate in one of the districts of North Bengal.  As the son of the soil (Cooch Behar) and having his education upto graduation in Cooch Behar, he has the intimate knowledge about the soil and the region, its language, culture, socio-economic-political strength and weaknesses.  He has further sharpened his knowledge by sincere studies on North Bengal in connection with his doctoral thesis on linguistic and ethno-musicological analysis of Bhawaiya, the popular folk song of North Bengal, of which he is a Grade-A performer. He obtained Ph.D in Ethno-musicology from Rabindra Bharati University and was awarded D.Litt. (Hon.) by North Bengal University for his contribution to North Bengal’s music and culture.  He has authored three books on North Bengal’s history, language and culture – two in Bengali and one in English.  He is a regular contributor to different journals on subjects relating to folk music and socio-economic aspects of North Bengal.
