About the Book
The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra (VBT) is one of the key scriptures of the non-dual Hindu tradition of Kashmir (Tantric) Shaivism Trika school composed in 163 Sanskrit anushtubh stanzas. The VBT is a text of the Trika lineage of the Kaula Trika which was founded by the doughter of sage Tryambaka named Kaula Trika, whose name is sadly lost in the mists of time. The name comes from the Sanskrit vijnana, meaning “wisdom” or “knowledge,” and bhairava, meaning “formidable.” it is difficult to establish an exact date for the text, and it could have been written at some time from the 7th to the 8th century AD. In Shaivism, a branch of Hinduism that worships Shiva as the supreme deity, Bhairava is a fierce incarnation of Shiva. The text is presented as a discourse between Shiva and his wife, Parvati (Shakti). She asks Shiva to explain the Ultimate Reality and how one can realize it. He responds with the 112 tantric meditation methods (yuktis) or centering techniques (dharanas) for becoming one with divine consciousness. Those methods include such spiritual practices as chanting mantras, awakening kundalini energy, and using mudras and pranayama breathing exercises.
