About the Book
Savitribai Phule is a relatively unknown personality to Modern India. Due to inadequate information about her life and her work, many modern historians and social scientists have missed to acknowledge her contribution to the domain of anti-caste politics and women’s’ movement in modern India. The aim of this book is primarily to recover her role from the larger unobtrusiveness about her work in the field of history and gender studies. This book seeks to emphasize that Savitribai was not just a wife of a famous social reformer of the 19th century. But she was actively involved in the public life as an educational campaigner, poet, women’s emacipator, and leading social reformer. This book is not a biographical account of Savitribai Phule but it is an attempt to highlight her work and situate it into a larger history of modern India.
