About the Book
This book is compiled into four chapters (Pâdas) and each chapter classified into three sections: the actual translation, the approach to the sûtras and the translation and with commentary. The first chapter Samadhi Pâda (51 sutras) refers to a blissful state where the yogi is absorbed into the One. This chapter describes first the meaning of yoga and then the nature and the means to attaining samâdhi. The second chapter Sadhana Pâda (55 sutras) describes two forms of Yoga: Kriya Yoga (Action Yoga) deals the yoga of selfless action and service and Ashtanga Yoga (Eightfold or Eightlimbed Yoga) Yoga describes the eight limbs that together constitute Râja Yoga. The third chapter Vibhuti Pada (56 sutras) explains technique to attain supra-normal powers (siddhi) by the practice of Yoga. The fourth chapter Kaivalya (Isolation) Pâda (34 sutras) describes the process of emancipation, liberation and used interchangeably with moksha (liberation), which is the goal of Yoga. This text is only for serious students of Yoga who would like to embark on a personal journey of transformation and liberation.
About the Author
Swami Parmeswaranand is one of the major pioneers of the interfaith movement and the most respected Yoga Masters of our time. His teachings and spirit guide us toward a life of peace and to religious harmony among all people. Invited to come to the West in 1986, he was quickly embraced by young Americans looking for peace during the turbulent 1980’s. The peaceful atmosphere that prevailed throughout the event was often attributed to his message and blessings. Swamiji founded Integral Yoga Center for teaching various methods of yoga, including hatha yoga, selfless service, and meditation. Today more than 50 Integral Teaching Centers throughout the world.
