About the Book
This book has special significance today because of increasing dangers to the world environment posed by natural hazards and their effects on economic development. It not only aims at forecasting and describing natural disasters, but also at concentrating on the management aspect, meticulously explaining the important steps that need to be taken to manage the fallout in the wake of the various disasters. It also talks about the recent progresses made in remote sensing and the state-of-the-art technology available in India, which can help monitor and predict these natural phenomena. It also suggests a comprehensive warning system that need to be implemented, so that damage can be considerably controlled. This book is designed into seven chapters that deals with the process of a hazard turning to disaster, identify the causes and rectify the same through public policy. It also explores holistic perception to disaster management cycle that integrates disaster management with development planning in predisaster activities to minimise vulnerability of disaster. It also overviews of mitigation activities and problems faced while implementing mitigation in disaster prevention and rescue operation.
About the Author
Dr. Amit Harichandan retired as Head of the Dept. Geography from B.N. College Khurda, Orissa. Earlier he worked as an advisor to Geological Survey Dept. of Orissa. In his capacity as a professor he has represented different international seminars including Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE). He has written five books including Basic Information Systems which won awards in Asian Book Publishing Association. He is now fulltime devoted to writing fin different Journals and his articles are regularly published in The Indian Express and The Times of India.
