The book has been written to serve as a Textbook of Rural Sociology for students of M.A. (Sociology) in various Indian Universities. The text focuses on how rural people and communities are socially, culturally, politically, and economically organized. This book provides key insights into the emergence of rural sociology as a discipline, structure and size of rural household’s organisation, tradition and transformation in rural communities, characteristics and types of villages, rural-urban continuum, rural social structure in India, peasant movements in India and its changing pattern from local to global, caste-based political mobilisation in electoral politics, and rural development programmes and policies in nine chapters. The matter has been presented in an analytical style using central, side and running headings to make the subject easy to understand and remember. The language used is easy and free from technical jargon. In matters of discussion, integral and holistic approach has been adopted to give a balanced view. The matter of this book has been taken from various sources and we are thankful for all those scholars whose works have been in this book. Thus, an attempt has been made to make this work an ideal textbook on the subject. It is hoped that the book would also be of great help to trainees, agriculturists and social workers.
