About the Book

This book looks at why the varied types of partnerships have formed in health services sector, what are the various models of partnership and what are some of the challenges that they face in developing countries. These questions have been answered in following chapters. First chapter introduces the concept of public-private partnerships in Public health services while second chapter describes two illustrative examples of public-private collaboration: first, the UNDP/World Bank/WHO special program for research and training in tropical diseases (TDR) and second the philanthropic drug donation programs. Third chapter explains the process of cross-sector collaboration in the public health arena and the factors contributing to effective partnering while fourth chapter explores how participants in partnerships should behave from an ethical perspective. Fifth chapter examines the partnership of the Mectizan Donation Program and its role in private corporations. Sixth chapter argues that private corporations have an ethical obligation to engage in partnerships for health improvement in poor countries, while seventh chapter argues that such partnerships are likely to have a negative impact on United Nations Organization and therefore should be strictly regulated and monitored.
